Your end-of-year celebrations at home have surely made it a memorable event. Your carpet is likely to have suffered from increased traffic. This includes family, friends and loud groups of people – important link!
It is important to include carpet cleaning in the post-holiday cleanup of your home. Your ability to clean your carpet can mean the difference between it being beautiful or ruined. To keep the rug in the best condition possible after the holidays, there are several things you should be aware of:
Professional carpet cleaners will all tell you that the earlier you act after a spillage, the better your chances are of cleaning the area. Most small spills can be cleaned using baby wipes. Unfortunately, all spills may not be as innocent. If you spill chocolate or ketchup, it’s important to take a slightly different approach. White vinegar is a great carpet stain removal agent. Dip the cloth in the solution before applying it to the stained area. You can use ammonia as well, but be sure to test the solution on the carpet before using it.
Drinks: a glass or two of red wine spilled can cause your heart to skip a beating. If you see this, wipe the area with a clean dry cloth. This will absorb any excess water. You can then proceed to wash the area with warm soapy water. You can also use a mixture of vinegar and water. Rub the solution over the stained area. After you are satisfied, wash the area with cold tap water and blot. If you have trouble removing a coffee or a tea stain you can dilute it with beer.
These sticky substances can easily damage your carpet fibres. Best to use ice and freeze the area. If the gum, wax or other substance freezes and sticks to a surface, you can carefully remove it using a blunt instrument. Repeat this process until no trace remains. Vacuum the area thoroughly.
Ironing is the best option if the oil from your holiday cooking has stained your carpet. Place a sheet over the spill, and iron on warm. If you have a large spill, add baking soda to the cornstarch and pour it over. The baking soda will absorb the bulk of it.
By taking care of the carpet cleaning aspects, you will ensure that there is no damage to your carpet after the holidays. This will ensure that you do not ruin all the fun.
